I study the influence of ancient Greece and Rome in English literature. 指導分野:The Classical Tradition in English Literature

In my graduation thesis seminar, students will be introduced to my academic specialty, the western classical tradition, which is the influence of ancient Greece and Rome on English literature. In the first semester, we will read the 12 labors of Heracles from Greek mythology, some of Agatha Christie’s short mysteries from her collection The Labors of Hercules, and answer comprehension questions on both works, while every week there will be a quiz on the content from the previous class; there will also be a four-page research essay to write on one of the short mysteries of the student’s choice that was not covered in the course. In the second semester, we will read a short poem by the Latin poet Horace in English translation, the novella “Daisy Miller” by Henry James, the short story “Roman Fever” by Edith Wharton, and answer comprehension questions on all three works, while every week there will be a quiz on the content from the previous class; there will also be a five-page research essay to write on carpe diem, or seize the day, the theme of the semester. Both research essays will help students to write main chapters of their graduation theses the following year, the topic of which can be on any literary work of the student’s choice (in other words, it does not have to be on the western classical tradition).
